National Eating Disorder Awareness Week February 26 through March 3rd

Disordered eating and eating disorders are not the same thing.

Disordered eating refers to a range of problematic eating behaviors and distorted attitudes towards food, weight, shape, and appearance that are not severe enough to meet the diagnostic criteria for an eating disorder.

Eating disorders are complex and characterized by persistent disturbances in eating behaviors and psychological functioning, and each major eating disorder is defined, diagnosed, treated, and monitored by a team of healthcare professionals.

Disordered eating and eating disorders differ in diagnosis, severity and persistence, and psychological distress and functional impairment. While both cause distress and impairment in day-to-day functioning, eating disorders meet specific diagnostic criteria and often result in medical/physical complications, occupational issues, and interpersonal relationship problems, as well as bouts of depression and/or anxiety. Individuals with disordered eating exhibit similar eating patterns and psychological distress but do not meet the frequency, duration, and/or level of psychological impairment necessary for a diagnosable eating disorder.

Disordered eating can be caused by biological factors such as genetic predisposition, neurobiology, and hormonal imbalances. Psychological factors like low self-esteem, negative body image, and difficulty managing negative emotions also play a role. Sociocultural issues, such as messages about "healthy eating" can lead to body dissatisfaction and dieting behavior. Environmental factors like traumatic events can also contribute to disordered eating.

Understanding the Risks of Disordered Eating and Eating Disorders:

Not all disordered eating leads to a diagnosable eating disorder. However, disordered eating can increase the risk of developing such a disorder. In these cases, early intervention is critical since it has been shown to enhance treatment outcomes. Seeking professional help is also a vital step in preventing disordered eating from progressing into a severe or chronic state, or developing into a serious eating disorder. If you or anyone you know is experiencing disordered eating or suspects an eating disorder, it is essential to seek guidance from a qualified professional who specializes in eating disorders.

A step that can mediate this issue is being well informed. Look for clear, concise, and factual information on nutrition and nutrition that works for your unique needs and desires. Always cross reference and constantly check in with your healthcare provider/s to ensure you're maximizing your potential.
